The Design Impacts of Web 2.0
Many of you may have heard the term web 2.0, it might even make you cringe. For those of you who haven’t – web 2.0 does not refer to a new version of the web, but rather to the changes in the ways end-users use the web. Web 2.0 describes changing trends in web design and technology which aim to enhance creativity, communications, collaboration, and functionality. Just as the term web 2.0 describes these trend changes, it also impacts all facets of the web, such as security, development, and what my team does all day: design.

Out of Crisis – Benefit

In 2000, the NASDAQ index peaked at over 5,000.  Within 2 years it was well under 2,000 and this shadow marker for the health of the technology sector accurately reflected the results of the Dot Com collapse as well as the overall technology sector malaise that swamped both good companies and bad, and sharply curtailed (temporarily) new VC investment and existing company portfolio returns.  In late 2000, one of the Interactive Industry’s bell weather publications, “The Industry Standard”, was required reading.

A Look Back

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to recognize the anniversary of one of the defining moments of modern computing history. Forty years ago this week, Doug Englebart and researchers at the Stanford Research Institute gave what has been termed “The Mother of All Demos” to a crowd of approximately 1,000 people at the Memorial Auditorium at Stanford University. In the Demo, Englebert and his team showed off what was essentially the first personal computer, complete with a mouse (made of wood of all things!), screen editing, hypertext linking between documents, and tele-conferencing.

Paging Dr. Google

Google has just reintroduced their new website to estimate flu activity in your state. The amazing thing about it is that Google’s service estimates flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional flu surveillance systems.
